80-year-old woman dies in Pittsylvania County crash


PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. – An 80-year-old woman died at the scene of a two-car crash on Friday afternoon, according to state police.

The crash happened at 3:55 p.m. on Route 29, at the intersection with Carter Lodge Road in Pittsylvania County.

A 1995 Dodge Caravan was making a right turn onto Route 29 from Carter Lodge Road, when it was struck by a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe traveling north on Route 29, according to police.

The Dodge was driven by Emma Belle Barksdale, 80, of Vernon Hill, Virginia. She was wearing her seat belt and died at the scene.

There was one passenger in the vehicle who was also injured and taken to the hospital.

The 2003 Chevrolet was driven by Jacen David Hamilton, 53, of Thomasville, North Carolina. He was wearing his seat belt and was hospitalized for injuries received in the crash.

There were also two passengers in his vehicle who were also injured and transported to the hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
