80-year-old woman killed in Pittsylvania County wreck that hurt four


PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. – An 80-year-old woman has died after a wreck on Route 29 in Pittsylvania County. 

It happened around 4 p.m. Saturday at the intersection with Carter Lodge Road. 

A 1995 Dodge Caravan was making a right turn onto Route 29 from Carter Lodge Road, when the Dodge was struck by a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe traveling north on Route 29.  

The 1995 Dodge was driven by Emma Belle Barksdale, 80, of Vernon Hill, Virginia. State police say she was wearing her seat belt and died at the scene.  There was one passenger in the vehicle who was injured and taken to the hospital.

The 2003 Chevrolet was driven by Jacen David Hamilton, 53, of Thomasville, North Carolina.  He was wearing his seat belt and was taken to the hospital for injuries. There were also two passengers in the vehicle that were also injured and taken to the hospital.

The crash is under investigation.
