Billy's Flea Market heavily damaged in early morning fire

The owner of the flea market does not have insurance

BASSETT, Va.UPDATE

A man plans to rebuild a popular gathering place that was destroyed by a fire Monday morning.

Firefighters responded to Billy's Flea Market in Bassett just before 6:30 a.m.

Bassett's volunteer fire chief says a driver passing by called 911.

The owner lives behind the business and says the flames woke him up. He said people often gathered there to listen to live music and he plans to rebuild at least part of the business.

The fire chief says a problem with the electricity has been ruled as the cause, but a more specific cause will likely not be determined.

The owner did not request an investigation because he did not have insurance.
