Man found guilty in fatal 2016 Smith Mountain Lake boating accident

Drewry Hall, 21, found guilty of improper boating; fined

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. – A guilty verdict has been handed down in the case of a fatal 2016 boating accident that left a North Carolina teen dead.

According to online court records, Drewry Hall, 21, was found guilty Monday in Pittsylvania County general district court of improper boating.

He was ordered to pay nearly $450 in court costs and fines.

The Martinsville man was originally charged with reckless boating.

He's also charged with purchasing or possessing alcohol under the age of 21, but according to online court records a verdict had not been handed down as of Tuesday.

As we've previously reported, Gabby Ayers, 17, was killed when Hall's boat hit the jet ski she was riding on at Smith Mountain Lake July 23.

Hall's lawyer has said alcohol was not a factor in the accident and Hall jumped into the water to help Ayers after the collision.

In August of this year, Hall was found not guilty of getting documents to make a false statement, the third and final charge against him related to the accident.

Pittsylvania County commonwealth attorney Bryan Haskins did not return 10 News's call Tuesday afternoon for more information.
