Police kill father holding teacher hostage

Man's daughter was 1st-grader at the school

A SWAT team in Riverside, California, killed a father who held a teacher hostage for nearly seven hours Tuesday in an elementary school, according to CBS News and the Washington Post.

The parent has not yet been named. Relatives told CBS News the man’s daughter is a first-grader at the school, Castle View Elementary.

Police responded at about 11 a.m., to a report of a parent who assaulted a school office staff member. Witnesses said the man became agitated and punched a male staff member.

He then forced his way into the classroom where he held first-grade teacher Linda Montgomery hostage, authorities told CBS. It’s unknown if the man was armed. Montgomery suffered no injuries but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Students were evacuated to a nearby school. Officials have canceled classes at Castle View Elementary for the remainder of the week.
