Search underway after man flees stolen vehicle in Botetourt County, state police say

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. – Authorities are searching for a man who is wanted in connection with a stolen vehicle.

The Virginia State Police said a stop was made Monday at 9:47 p.m. on what appeared to be a disabled Range Rover in the right northbound travel lane of Interstate 81 at mile marker 164 in Botetourt County. That vehicle was found to have been reported stolen out of North Carolina.

State police said during the stop, a man ran from the scene and into the woods, but after a search by state police and the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office until about 2:30 a.m., the man could not be found.

Virginia State Police said officers responded Tuesday at 11:09 a.m. to a suspicious person coming out of the woods along the southbound lanes of I-81 near mile marker 165, but when troopers arrived, the man ran and a foot pursuit began.

Police said K-9 and aviation units are now assisting in the search for the man.

Police described the man as Hispanic, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall and 180 pounds.

He was last seen wearing black sweatpants and a gray shirt.
