ROANOKE – It is Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. It's held every year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and all the big shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Nonprofits across the country want you to give today.

Do you know what to do in case of an active shooter? There's a free seminar tonight at the Franklin Center in Rocky Mount. Police agencies are frequently requested by schools, businesses, and community members on what they should do if confronted with an active shooter. It's from 6 to 8 p.m. and pre-registration is required. Call 540-483-0179 to reserve you seat. Topics include the history and prevalence of active shooter events, civilian response options, medical issues, and considerations for conducting drills.

The Foundation for Roanoke Valley and Prevention Council of Roanoke Valley will announce a major grant this morning and new initiative to address opioid abuse in the community.

The Wythe County Board of Supervisors are holding a public hearing to discuss paying for renovations at George Wythe High School. The meeting starts at 7 p.m.

Martinsville City Council meets today. On the agenda is a discussion on legislative priorities for 2018--- including a new goal of supporting the Virginia Grocery Investment Fund to improve nutrition and access to quality food and encouraging more grocery stores to move in where none exist.

You can have coffee with Roanoke County Police officers this morning from 7:30- 9:30. This event will be hosted by Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea - on Starkey Road. They invited the community to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee.

There will be a new Loveworks sign in our area. The Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce is unveiling the new LOVE sign this morning on US Highway 29 in Blairs.
