Danville police officers grow beards to raise money for children in need

Officer raised $7,000 for the departments 'Cops and Kids' program

DANVILLE, Va. – Danville police officers have raised nearly $10,000 to help kids in need this Christmas thanks to a monthlong fundraiser.

Officers spent the month of November growing beards in order to collect money for the department's "Cops and Kids" program.

Officers who wanted to grow a beard donated $10.

As word spread, donations began pouring in from both businesses and individuals.

A total of $7,000 was raised.

"I've been very impressed with the generosity this year. This is a very good cause and it makes a lot of people happy when we're able to take these kids shopping," Danville Police Department Lt. Mike Wallace said.

As of Thursday, Wallace wasn't sure how many kids were going to get to go shopping this year.
