Local nonprofit offers free coats for kids in need at Westside Elementary School

More than 250 coats available to kids in need

ROANOKE, Va. – A local nonprofit called GODS Foundation is hosting its first winter apparel giveaway at Westside Elementary School in Roanoke this weekend.

The organization, which is less than a year old, is teaming up with several churches and local businesses to provide winter coats to almost 300 students.

Christine Carter, who volunteers for the foundation, hopes this will help many children in the community keep warm this winter season.

“The hope is basically to relieve some of the stress from the parents if you're struggling or having a hard time with different things, and the last thing we want you to worry about is trying to purchase the coat for your child. So we're going to provide that coat for you, to make sure the children are warm,” Carter said.

The winter apparel giveaway is Saturday at Westside Elementary from 9 a.m. to noon.
