750 donated bikes collected at Community Church for kids impacted by Hurricane Harvey

Community Church in Salem begins drive to Houston to deliver bikes to kids

Stover Dalton, along with several volunteers in Salem, are traveling to Houston to deliver hundreds of bikes.

“Well it really became important to know what we can do for these families. Some of them lost everything. This may be their only Christmas present for the children,” Dalton said.

Since the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, members of the Community Church in Salem began collecting hundreds of bikes, because they wanted to make sure the kids impacted by the storm receive a special Christmas gift this year.

When Bob Morris saw video of bicycles floating in the water during the storm, he thought a new bike would be a great gift.

“I saw bicycles and tricycles going down the river in the flood. So I thought it would be a good idea to get some bicycles for the kids, because the parents are not going to be able to do anything,” Morris said.

In just a few months, the church collected nearly 750 bikes from around the community.

“They're all brand new bikes,” Dalton said.

Dalton is excited to meet the kids and share his hope for them.

“I hope this gives them joy for Christmas,” Dalton said.

“Showing up in December not only helps the child, but it helps the families out,” the Rev. Thomas McCracken, pastor of the Community Church in Salem, said.

Dalton and his crew look forward to making the delivery this week.
