Mill Mountain Zoo receives over $70,000 in donations, needs more

ROANOKE,Va. – In response to its GoFundMe campaign, the Mill Mountain Zoo has received a large donation to its winter fund, which will keep the zoo running through the winter months.

The zoo has received more than $70,000 in donations to help provide the necessary funds for the animals.

Mary and Tom Tielking gave $25,000 to be used for general operations. An anonymous donor gave $50,000 to help with the day-to-day costs of keeping the zoo running.

The zoo is currently operating on winter hours and is open Thursday through Sunday, but it still has to take care of the animals every day.

“It costs $2,500 a day to run the zoo,” said education manager Bambi Godkin,“whether we are open or closed.”

On Saturday, the zoo will be hosting its Winter Wild Event and will be open to the public. The event will consist of vendors, crafts for children and live music. The cost is the price for general admission.
