Amtrak announces ridership numbers for first month of Roanoke operations

Roanoke platform opened on Oct. 31

ROANOKE, Va. – More than 2,000 people boarded an Amtrak train during the passenger rail service's first month of operation in Roanoke.

The Amtrak platform in downtown Roanoke opened Oct. 31 and through Nov. 30, 2,770 boarded at the stop, according to the passenger rail service.

If Roanoke kept that same monthly ridership for a full year, 33,240 people would have departed from the Star City

Looking at 2016 ridership numbers from the National Association of Railroad Passengers, if Roanoke achieves that level of ridership on an annual basis, it would be the 11th-most used Amtrak stop of the 21 stops in Virginia.

In 2016, Lynchburg had 81,594 riders, according to the NARP.
