Police: Home surveillance camera captures suspected theft of packages from porch in Danville

Jerry Lewis Hood Jr., 26, charged with grand larceny

DANVILLE, Va. – Danville police say surveillance video from a home in the 1000 block of Main Street shows 26-year-old Jerry Lewis Hood Jr. stealing two packages from the home's porch just after 2 p.m. Monday.

Police announced Wednesday morning that Hood was arrested Tuesday and released on bond.

He was charged with grand larceny.

Lt. Mike Wallace said the homeowner posted the video to Facebook as soon as he saw it and asked for help.

"I think it was shared over 500 times, and as a result of that, a suspect was developed," Wallace said.

On Wednesday, 10 News reached out to the homeowner, but he declined to be interviewed.

Wallace doesn't discourage posting video like this on social media, but he reminds people that sometimes, posting video can hinder the investigation.

"Calling the police and maybe having that discussion with the police also will help you decide on what you want to do. In this case, I'm glad that the homeowner did it," Wallace said.

"I can't stress enough the cooperation from the public with the tips. If you see something, say something. If you see something that's not right at your neighbor's house, be neighborly and call."

On Wednesday, 10 News spoke to people on the street about the issue of packages being stolen.

One man, who didn't want to be identified, said he does not encourage people to steal packages, but he understands why people do.

"You should get out here and work hard for it like everybody else, but it's not that simple," the man said. "Some people have felonies, some people fall on hard times. I mean, it's a struggle out here. I sit around and talked to a few people that actually had to go and do something illegal just to make it by."

Some of the items stolen Monday had been recovered Wednesday.

Police were continuing to try to track down the rest.
