Danville homeless shelter overwhelmed with donations

Shelter is seeing influx of people as frigid temperatures continue

DANVILLE, Va. – As the temperatures continue to drop, Danville's homeless shelter is seeing more people, and more donations, coming in.

The shelter can fit 16 people, but as of Friday there were only four beds left.

While donations were pouring in to help, shelter director Stephen Anderson was asking people to wait before giving anything else.

Several donations of food and other items had come in over the past few days.

He said that, in about a week, once some of the items are used up, he'll have a better idea of what's needed.

"When I'm asked, do we have more in the winter or more in the summer, my answer is whenever someone finds themselves in a homeless situation that's when they're going to come in. But, I can honestly say that with this temperature dropping like it has, we have had an increase," Anderson said.

If you are interested in donating, contact the shelter.
