Thousands without power as Arctic blast brings freezing temperatures

Thousands of Appalachian Power customers are waking up to a power outage Friday morning.

Roughly 2,770 customers in Pulaski County are affected by two different outages. One is due to an equipment failure and the other one is from an issue with the distribution line. All of those customers are expected to have power by 1:30 p.m.

The Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport has listed three flight cancellations. A flight from Philadelphia to Roanoke is canceled. The flight to New York has also been canceled for Friday, as well as the scheduled 3:10 p.m. departure to Philadelphia.

Although Radford City Schools are closed Friday, McHarg Elementary will open as a feeding and warming center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will be serving hot lunches. Any children who come will need to be supervised by a parent or guardian.

Those who live in that area and are unable to get to McHarg can still get a hot lunch. Call 540-731-3647 to place an order and they will deliver it to your home. Those who are in need of food for the weekend will receive a backpack full of food if they mention their need while placing a lunch order.

Floyd County Schools will open all elementary schools from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to serve a hot lunch for those who are interested. Children will need to be accompanied by an adult.
