Electric blanket could be to blame for Danville mobile home fire

Firefighters believe blanket may have shorted out

DANVILLE, Va. – A woman just trying to stay warm may have started a house fire in Danville.

Firefighters responded to Lot 12 at 260 Eastwood Drive just after 12:30 Monday afternoon for a reported structure fire.

While the cause of the fire remained under investigation late Monday afternoon, Danville Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Key said a short in an electric blanket may have started the fire.

Family members of the woman who lived in the mobile home said she woke up and found her bed on fire.

She and her cat quickly got out of the home.

"Units en route could see heavy smoke showing from the bypass before they made entry into the scene," Key explained.

"First-in engine had heavy smoke and fire from the rear of the trailer area, which was the bedroom area. They pulled two attack lines and they protected the exposures before we attacked the fire."

The woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and then taken to Sovah Health in Danville for further treatment.
