BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. – The Botetourt County Sheriff's Office dedicated its K-9 Memorial on Friday.
The memorial, which is in front of the county's Public Safety Building, honors the bravery and dedication of the past and present 13 canines who have served the Sheriff's Office for more than 43 years.
The statue is of the German Shepherd Baron.
He died in August 2017 and was the only canine to sacrifice his life while in service. The sheriff's office says it's important to recognize their four-legged partners who help them serve and protect their community.
"You can't replace them. I mean they become a part of the shift and they become a part of the family. But they are also a tool that we use. A tool that we do not want to see them make the ultimate sacrifice. We want to see them retire and live out their life," said Lt. Jeff Boone, Botetourt County Sheriff's Office.
Former K-9 handlers attended the memorial. There are currently two canine's working at the sheriff's office.
