No matter how you spell it, people will be lining up this morning for big savings in honor of National Doughnut Day (or National Donut Day, depending on your preference).

The holiday is celebrated each year on the first Friday in June. It's been around since 1938 and was first established as a way to honor The Salvation Army Donut Lassies who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

For now, let’s talk about the big players and what they’re offering Friday:

Daylight Donuts: The Rocky Mount doughnut shop will be giving away one free doughnut per customer from 5:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Duck Donuts: Get one free classic doughnut Friday, including bare, cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar. No purchase necessary. Customers will also get a buy-one-get-one-free doughnut coupon that can be redeemed until June 17.

Dunkin' Donuts: One free classic donut of your choice when you buy any beverage. The offer is good all day at participating Dunkin’ locations nationwide.

Edible Arrangements: The chain has launched new Edible Donuts (made with granny smith apples, chocolate and a handful of toppings). On Friday, get a free doughnut. From June 2-6 any size or combo is buy-one-get-one free.

Krispy Kreme: One free doughnut of your choice. No purchase necessary. This is available only at participating shops across the U.S. and Canada.

Mama Crockett's Cider Donuts: Friday the trucks will be set up at WSLS10 in Downtown Roanoke and at The Eye Site in Martinsville. Saturday they'll be set up in Lynchburg. Ten customers will win a free dozen doughnuts at each location. Click here for more details.

Papa John's: A free order of caramel-crème-filled doughnut holes with any online pizza order. Yes, you're reading this correctly: Papa John's as in the pizza chain. And yes, the doughnut holes are new -- for those of you who aren't familiar with the product. They're debuting as a menu item just in time for Friday, and they'll only be available for a limited time.

Walmart: Get one free glazed doughnut at all Walmart stores on Friday. The retailer expects to give away 1.2 million doughnuts.
