Man faces charges after State Police say he drove his car off I-81 overpass, landed on Route 311
Driver ejected from his truck, treated for serious injuries
ROANOKE, Va. – UPDATE
A man was taken to the hospital and now faces charges after State Police say his car ran off an overpass and landed on Route 311 below I-81 on Sunday.
Authorities say the crash happened around 5 p.m. on I-81 at mile marker 140 when a 1999 Ford F-150 was driving north and ran of the left side of the highway.
The truck went into the median, hit the concrete barrier along the southbound lanes of the overpass, and landed below on Route 311, which runs under I-81.
The driver, Quinton Smith, 24, was ejected from the car onto Route 311 and was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Police say Smith was charged with reckless driving because speed was a factor in the crash.
Authorities are still investigating the crash.
Virginia State Police are investigating a crash that happened on Interstate 81 at Exit 140 in Roanoke County around 5 p.m. Sunday evening.
Authorities said that a white pickup ran off the left side of the road into the median and onto Thompson Memorial Boulevard.
Authorities said that the driver was injured during the crash and Thompson Memorial Boulevard will be closed for an extended period of time.
