Explosion destroys roof of Famous Anthony's on Williamson Road

All 12 people inside the building made it out safely

ROANOKE, Va. – All 12 people inside the Famous Anthony's Restaurant on Williamson Road at the time of an explosion Friday morning are safe.

Roanoke County Fire & Rescue responded to the explosion at 6:30 a.m. and preliminary findings show that an ignited natural gas leak in the mechanical room caused the explosion.

The Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office has determined the estimated damage to the restaurant is $250,000.

The investigation is ongoing and it is unknown when the restaurant might reopen due to the extent of the damage.

Units from Hollins, Cave Spring and Roanoke City responded.
