BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - The future of the old Blacksburg High School remains in question, six years after its roof collapsed.
Blacksburg Town Council offered to buy the land from the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors to build a new recreational facility.
The outdoor recreational space is currently open to the public.
The two bodies were unable to agree on pricing, so town council suggested saving the property for a future elementary school.
"I think this is a great middle ground," said Blacksburg mayor Ron Rordam. "There will be recreational space there for awhile, but it also takes care of the school system and the children that we all want to take care of."
The county was not sold on this proposal.
"There's not a great need for an elementary school in Blacksburg at this time," said board of supervisors chair Chris Tuck. "However, there is a great need for elementary schools in Christiansburg."
The county said it will make a decision on the school proposal from the town by January.
