Man's dog sits on front porch after man dies in house fire

Cause of fire still under investigation

APPOMATTOX, Va. – 5:38 p.m. update:

Just hours after a house caught on fire in the 100 block of Crawley Lane, a dog sat on the front porch, drenched in the rain.

Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jonathan Garrett said a man inside the house during the fire was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Garrett later confirmed to 10 News that the man died.

When fire crews arrived, Garrett said the house was fully engulfed in flames.

“The fire was seen coming from the roof of the house. When we got there, we found fire in the kitchen area and smoke coming out throughout the house,” Garrett said.

The home is a total loss.

“It's pretty extensive on the inside of the house,” Garrett said.

When crews spotted the dog, Garrett said they brought the doghouse closer to the front porch.

“We were hoping he would go in there for some shelter,” Garrett said.

However, the dog continued to sit outside in the rain.

“We notified animal control and they will, based on their policies and procedures, come out to see if the dog needs to be taken to the shelter,” Garrett said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
