BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - A local organization that helps people in need get a roof over their head is now fighting for its life.

The New River Valley HOME Consortium builds housing units for low to moderate income residents in Montgomery, Pulaski, Giles and Floyd counties, as well as the city of Radford.

This year, Congress is considering cutting the Consortium's budget by 93 percent, leaving it with just about $35,000 for 2016.

Leaders say that is not enough to build even one unit.

The fiscal year begins in October for Congress, but it is unclear when the HOME Consortium will learn if these cuts are approved.
