RADFORD (WSLS 10) - New River Valley leaders scouted out the New River ahead of one of its biggest cleanups.
Renew the New is coming up August 27th. The goal is to bring in 400 volunteers to pick up trash out of nine square miles of the New River.
This brings together the city of Radford and Pulaski, Montgomery, Floyd and Giles counties.
Thursday, leaders spent the day on the river mapping out the areas with the highest trash buildup, so they know where to direct volunteers next month.
Giles County has done its own Renew the New for about 15 years, but this will be the first time all the New River Valley jurisdictions have teamed up for the event.
"The river obviously flows through all of our localities, so cleaning up one stretch will ultimately help clean up a stretch downstream," said Radford spokeswoman Jenni Wilder.
The Renew the New float is expected to last about four hours.
