26-year-old charged with second-degree murder in Covington shooting

One person is dead, another is being treated for life-threatening injuries

COVINGTON, Va. – One man is in jail after authorities said he killed someone on Thursday evening in Covington.

At about 6:15 p.m., police received a 911 call about a possible breaking and entering in the 300 Block of East Prospect Street that resulted in a possible shooting.

The first officers to arrive could tell a shooting had happened and called for medical attention while securing the scene, according to the Covington Police Department.

Two people had been shot. One person had been killed, while the other was transported to an area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

Police later arrested Kurell Wallace, charging him with second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

He is currenlty being held in the Alleghany Regional Jail.

The Covington Police Department is conducting an ongoing investigation in conjunction with the Virginia State Police, and also being assisted by the Alleghany County and City of Covington Sheriff’s Office.

Police are investigating a shooting that happened on Thursday evening in Covington near Prospect Street.

The shooting started as a break-in, according to the Covington Police Department.

The department would not comment on the number of victims nor the extent of their injuries.

Several people have been detained in connection with this shooting, according to Covington police.
