WASHINGTON, D.C. – Members of Congress are moving toward possibly impeaching President Donald Trump after Wednesday’s siege at the Capitol.
The House of Representatives brought forth one article of impeachment for “incitement of insurrection” on Monday. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hinted at the possibility of impeachment if Vice President Mike Pence refused to unseat Trump through the 25th Amendment.
Virginia Tech political professor Karen Hult said the new impeachment charge symbolizes lawmakers’ disdain of the Capitol riot.
“What we’re seeing is that both sides in Congress in both parties are stepping forward and saying ‘This is not acceptable,’” Hult said. “Both sides are saying, ‘We have to do something to address the clear divisions in the country and in Congress, more specifically.’”
President Trump has been impeached by the House of Representatives once already, but the Senate voted along party lines to acquit him of the charges.
