Memorial featuring 7,040 dog tags honors fallen heroes in Lynchburg

Each tag is engraved with a name of those who died in the War on Terror

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Lynchburg-area veterans are remembering our fallen heroes with a special display.

An American flag designed with 7,040 dog tags was erected at Monument Terrace Thursday. Each dog tag is engraved with the name of those who died in the War on Terror.

The display is 28 feet long and six feet tall. It travels across the country thanks to Veterans and Athletes United, a nonprofit helping vets with disabilities live everyday lives.

Lynchburg’s Veterans Council wanted to bring it to the Hill City as we approach 20 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11th and the start of the War on Terror.

“We realized these 13 names from the Lynchburg area are on this wall right here, too; and it sort of hits me in a way that I didn’t expect. I got a little emotional,” said Steve Bozeman of the Lynchburg Area Veterans Council.

The wall will be on display in Lynchburg through next Friday. Monument Terrace is located at the corner of Church and Ninth Streets.
