Man charged with first-degree murder in connection to his mother’s death in Pulaski County

According to Justin L. Griffith, Commonwealth’s Attorney for Pulaski County, the Pulaski County Circuit Court accepted a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

“Our office will continue to, not only work with DBHDS in this case, but also work together with other agencies to ensure that our path to justice for the Mangekian family is based on a fully informed decision that factors in both the needs of the Mangekian family as well as the needs of all Pulaski County citizens to remain safe in our community,” the release read, in part.


UPDATE (April 23, 2021)

Pulaski County deputies have arrested a person of interest in connection with the recent death of a Pulaski County woman.

On Friday at about 12:30 p.m., Cory Steven Mangekian was located in Radford City at a Food Lion on Tyler Avenue and taken into custody, according to authorities.

Cory was charged with first-degree murder in connection to the death of his 60-year-old mother, Sandra Lee Mangekian.

He’s currently being held at the New River Valley Regional Jail without bond.

Authorities conducted a search on Thursday for the 26-year-old son.

On Wednesday, at about 3:30 p.m., deputies said they responded to the 6700 block of Oxford Ave in the Fairlawn area of Pulaski County in reference to a possible body inside of the house.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a woman who was later identified as Sandra Lee Mangekian.

During the investigation, authorities said they learned that the victim’s vehicle was missing from her house along with a firearm and ammunition and believed that Cory had stolen her car.

On Friday, deputies gave a special thanks to the citizens, both of Pulaski County and neighboring jurisdictions who contacted their office with information that led to locating Cory.

The Pulaski County Sherrif’s Office has identified a person of interest in connection with the recent death of a Pulaski County woman.

Authorities are searching for 26-year-old Cory Steven Mangekian, whom they consider both armed and dangerous, in connection to the death of 60-year-old Sandra Lee Mangekian.

On Wednesday, at about 3:30 p.m., deputies said they responded to the 6700 block of Oxford Ave in the Fairlawn area of Pulaski County in reference to a possible body inside of the house.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a woman who was later identified as Sandra Lee Mangekian.

During the investigation, authorities said they learned that the victim’s vehicle was missing from her house along with a firearm and ammunition.

Her vehicle was later found at another residence within the Fairlawn area and investigators learned that the unoccupied residence had been broken into and a silver 2013 Infinity FX3 with a Virginia Registration of WTA1304 was taken.

Authorities said that Cory is believed to have left the area in that Infinity SUV and they are not sure where he is going.

Cory is 5 feet, 3 inches tall with brown hair and brown eyes and has a tattoo on his right forearm.

He was last known to list himself as homeless while in Texas for a short period of time but has lived in both Florida and New Hampshire.

He is wanted on the following charges, with possible additional charges in the future:

  • Felony unauthorized use
  • Felony breaking and entering
  • Felony grand larceny
