ROANOKE, Va. – After watching the jury find Derek Chauvin guilty on three counts of murder and manslaughter charges in the killing of George Floyd, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine said “it’s a step towards justice.”
Kaine said the verdict marks the beginning of earning the public’s trust for holding police accountable for their actions.
He said he does not agree with defunding the police or eliminating qualified immunity but he is endorsing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
He wants to reform immunity doctrines that would provide a partial shield while hold officers liable.
“If you do that I guarantee you within a very short period of time after you’ve made that change, you’ll see a lot less reckless misconduct,” Kaine said.
Kaine also wants more transparency on settlement payments that would let taxpayers know how much of their taxes go to the settlement of police misconduct cases.
