Man visiting a hospitalized relative in Roanoke arrested, charged in connection with Martinsville shooting

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Authorities have arrested the man they believe shot someone on Sunday in Martinsville.

Donte Freeman, 39, of Martinsville, has been arrested in connection to the November 7 shooting that happened on Dunlap Street.

Freeman was arrested on Wednesday in Roanoke by Carilion Health System Police when he went to the hospital to visit a relative on an unrelated issue, according to the Martinsville Police Department.

He now faces six charges:

  • Aggravated malicious wounding
  • Armed robbery
  • Using a firearm to commit aggravated malicious wounding
  • Using a firearm while committing an armed robbery
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted fellon
  • Willfully discharging a firearm in a street resulting in bodily injury

Freeman is currently being held in the Roanoke City Jail as he is currently on federal probation.

One person is in the hospital after a shooting in Martinsville, according to police.

Authorities said the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Sunday on Dunlap Street.

The victim was taken to the hospital and police said there is no word on the extent of their injuries.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
