Virginia State Police is investigating a single-vehicle crash that resulted in a fatality early Saturday morning in Franklin County.
The incident occurred on Dec. 7 at 12:25 a.m. on Route 220, at the intersection with Southside Drive.

According to the police report, a 2017 Jeep Liberty was traveling south on Route 220 when it veered off the right side of the road. The vehicle overturned and subsequently struck a tree.
The driver, identified as Erick Keith Custis, 52, of Charleston, S.C., was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Unfortunately, Custis died at the scene.
Police have indicated that speed was a contributing factor in the crash. The investigation into the incident is ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
