Community supports Alleghany High School student who walked at prom

Ethan Thompson stood from wheelchair and walked across stage with friends

LOW MOOR, Va. – An Alleghany High School student is getting a lot of support from the community after doing something remarkable on prom night.

Ethan Thompson walked across the stage at Grand March with the help of two of his friends.

The two young women came up with the idea to ask Ethan to Grand March.

The 17-year-old was diagnosed with a lemon-sized brain tumor at the end of 2015.

Since surgery, he's undergone therapy to learn to walk again.

His family and teacher say they are so grateful for the community's support.

“It's more exciting to see him now take his first steps than it was when he was a baby. It's been amazing to see him up and walking around again,” said Marcy Thompson, Ethan’s mom.

“We made this child's night, because I have seen him come so far since August. He couldn't hold a pencil in August,” said teacher Tracie Buchanan.

Since prom, video of Ethan walking has been viewed thousands of times.

Despite his extensive brain tumor recovery, Ethan is on track to graduate high school next year with honors.
