ALLEGHANY COUNTY (WSLS 10) - People in Alleghany County are mourning the loss of Danny Keene. The beloved educator and high school girls basketball coach was killed in a two-vehicle crash Sunday near Caldwell, West Virginia. Keene spent nearly 29 years with the Alleghany Public School System.
On Monday the Alleghany community was coping with the sudden loss. At Alleghany High School (AHS) a parking space was blocked off and left empty to honor Keene.
"It's certainly going to take a while for us to more forward," said Gene Kotulka, Superintendent.
Co-workers described Keene as outgoing and dedicated.
"He never, ever knew a stranger," said Dwayne Ross, AHS. "He talked to anyone and everyone."
Friends said some of Keene's best lessons were taught outside the classroom where he coached several sports. Most notably, he lead the girls basketball team for 24 years.
"His style was that he cared about his kids he had them work hard," said Kotulka.
Trophies along with old photos and memories will remind people of good times with Danny Keene. Mountaineers said they'll always hold a special place for Coach Keene in their hearts
"You don't replace somebody with that type of spirit and enthusiasm," said Kotulka. "But you are going to work hard to get someone out there to be just as good. You don't replace, you find someone who will bring something similar."
Former Alleghany High School students who played for Keene's girls basketball team set up "The Coach Keene Memorial Fund". Anyone interested in contributing can make a donation at the Highlands Community Bank at 307 Thacker Avenue, Covington, Virginia 24426.
