Mourners pay respects to Carroll County deputy killed in crash

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Hundreds gathered on Wednesday to pay their final respects to Carroll County Deputy Curtis Bartlett who was killed in a crash last week while responding to a pursuit.

Loved ones say he lived an inspiring life.

Bagpipes played and members of the law enforcement community from across Virginia stood at attention as loved ones prepared to say goodbye to Curtis Bartlett. The funeral procession was in honor of the U.S. Army veteran who inspired others.

"We have loved him so much for these 32 years," said Sam Bartlett, Curtis' father. "Not only has he inspired others, but he inspired our family."

Bartlett was known as a fitness guru with a commitment to health. He was also committed to serving his fellow citizen. The 32-year-old touched live across the world. His tragic death brought them together.

"People have called from Canada, California, from all across the country just asking 'What can we do for Curtis's family'" said Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner. "That is what we are here for is to honor Curtis's family and the service he has done for this community and country."

Loved ones packed inside First Baptist Church in Galax to shed tears and share memories. They described Curtis as a loving son and brother. In addition, he was a dedicated member of law enforcement and the fitness community. Mourners say Curtis's legacy gives them strength.

"Curtis is inspiring us to not only cherish his memories but live more boldly in the future than we have in the past," said Sam Bartlett.

Bartlett's loved ones say in honor of his legacy, they've helped establish a foundation called "Police Fitness". The goal is to provide training and resources to people who put their lives on the line to protect others.
