CHARLESTON, S.C. (WSLS 10) - Police in Charleston, South Carolina, are at the scene of a shooting at a downtown church, a local lawmaker told CNN Wednesday night.

NBC news reports "multiple" people were shot, but an exact number of victims or conditions has not been released.

The suspect was described a white male, around 21-years-old with a slender build. He was said to be wearing a grey sweat shirt, blue jeans and timberland boots. He was also clean-shaven.

Soon after releasing the description, police took a man matching that description into custody. Police then announced they were still looking for the shooter.

The shooting took place at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, said State Rep. Wendell G. Gilliard who represents the district where the church is located. Gilliard didn't have additional information and said he was on his way to the scene.

WCBD crews said about 30 emergency responders were on the scene.

The Rev. Thomas Dixon, a pastor with the activist group People United to Take Back Our Community, told WCBD of Charleston that a Bible study session likely would have been in progress at the church, as is common in the African-American church "on any given Wednesday night."

CNN, WCBD and NBC News contributed to this report.
