Salem church to bring bikes to kids impacted by Hurricane Harvey

Community Church in Salem launched the Wheels for Hope campaign

SALEM, Va. – A local church is one step closer to reaching its goal of bringing bikes to kids in Houston impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

Back in September, Community Church in Salem launched the Wheels for Hope campaign, in an effort to ensure kids impacted by the storm will receive Christmas gifts this year.

“One of my members came to me a few months ago,” explains Pastor Tom McCracken. “He said with all that happened in Houston and all of the devastation, there are probably going to be some kids that don’t have presents. Everybody [there] is focused on the essentials, restoring electricity. So his idea was let’s bring bicycles down to them.”

About 150 bikes have already been donated in town and another 600 have been ordered and are in Houston, waiting for Community Church members to arrive.

“Being able to drive down there and say to 750 to 1,000 children, ‘Here’s Christmas,’ we’re really excited about that,” says McCracken. “So we have a team of five guys that are going down there to distribute all of those bikes in 15 different schools in Houston.”

Members of the church will leave Salem on December 10. There’s still time to donate, click here for more information.
