Popular musician killed in Craig County car accident

26-year-old musician Jesse Carper died in a crash.

CRAIG COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Family and friends are mourning the loss of a 26-year-old musician who died in a crash Monday morning.

Police say Jesse Carper was alone in his car when it went off the road, struck a tree, overturned and hit another tree. No one else was inside the vehicle. He died during the accident.

Loved ones said music was in Jesse Carper's blood. He was a fifth generation musician. Carper and his father, Steve, were members of the Locust Mountain Boys. The Bluegrass band played various venues including The Harvester. Bandmates described Jesse Carper has a natural. They said the 26 year old was a good picker who had had a unique high pitched voice.

"He would sit down and sing music with anybody" said Steve Carper Jr. "He had a smile and eyes that could bring joy to anybody."

Together, they made harmonious music and great memories. Carper, said Jesse was barely a teen when the band's first CD, "Ode to the Locust" was released. In addition to music, Jesse was also known for his love for hunting and fishing.

"He lived and breathed it {fishing}" said Carper Jr.. "When winter months came, everyone put their fishing poles up, not that boy."

On Monday, a makeshift memorial honored Jesse. People placed flowers, balloons and mementos near the area where he crashed. Although he's gone, many said he wont ever be forgotten. With a song in their hearts and strings in their hands, bandmates and loved ones hope to keep Jesse's legacy alive.

"I want to say I love him and I'll miss him a lot" said Carper Jr.. "I'll keep going on because I'll know he'll be right there with me."
