BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - More Americans than ever before are weighing in on the presidential race through social media, which is proving to be a strain on online friendships.
Facebook reported that 100 million Americans have generated 4 billion posts, comments, likes and shares about the election since January.
A recent Pew study showed that a quarter of Facebook users reported blocking someone because of political differences. It also found that many users did not have any social network friends on the opposite side of the aisle.
"On social media, you're not looking somebody in the eye," said Facebook user Steve Skripak. "On social media, you can treat someone like a picture."
In our own informal Facebook poll, dozens of viewers said they had personally experienced being "de-friended" due to political disagreements.
