Roanoke County Sheriff's office teaches public about firearms safety

SALEM (WSLS 10) - The Roanoke County Sheriff's office is starting a new program to educate people about gun safety.

The goal of the class is to teach people how to properly handle a gun.

The sheriff's office is offering one class a month with 16 students.

Spaces are full for June but you can still sign up for July.

"Reality it comes down to is education," says Eric Orange, Roanoke County Sheriff. "The reality is that firearms are in thousands, millions of homes throughout the country and the important thing as far as I'm concerned is that people who do possess or come in contact with them can safely handle them.
