Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center receives $55K grant

Money will be used for flight pen

ROANOKE – A local wildlife center is one step closer to providing long-term care for injured birds like owls, red-tailed hawks and even eagles.

After years of planning, the Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center of Roanoke received a $55,000 grant to build a flight pen on its property in Roanoke.

According to Sabrina Garvin, executive director of the center, the pen will allow the center to not only offer triage for injured birds, but continue long-term care on-site without transferring them to another center. While the grant pays for 70 percent of the project, Garvin said they need an additional $28,000.
