Two men arrested in Amherst for credit card fraud

Both men arrested are from Maryland

AMHERST – Police in Amherst have arrested two Maryland men for credit/debit card fraud.

Officers say Joseph Caleb and Jahrulle Terrence Caleb Whyte attempted to make purchases with multiple credit cards at the Food Lion on 1102 Washington Street on Friday, April 21, when employees became suspicious. When officers arrived at the store, the suspects ran away on foot to a vehicle in the parking lot. A second officer stopped the car and detected a heavy odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Officers searched the car and found 17 cloned credit/debit cards, false identification cards, and marijuana.

The two were taken to Amherst County Adult Detention Center.

Caleb faces nine counts of credit card forgery, nine counts of credit card theft, one count of providing false identification, one count of possession of false identification and one count of possession of marijuana. Whyte faces eight counts credit card forgery, eight counts of credit card theft and one count of possession of false identification.

More charges may be filed pending investigation.
