Governor Glenn Youngkin signed several pieces of legislation into law on Friday some of which include efforts to improve school safety as well as the establishment of training standards designed to help law enforcement recognize signs of human trafficking.

“We are here to provide solutions to the problems that matter to Virginians and we are working every day to serve our parents and students, veterans and law enforcement,” said Youngkin. “I thank these bipartisan legislators for their ability to find common sense solutions for their constituents and the Commonwealth.”

With the 45 bills that Youngkin signed into law on Friday, he focuses on several areas impacting Virginians such as issues involving agriculture and wildlife, veterans and the military, public safety and even transportation.

Many bills signed into law were sponsored by local lawmakers.

For instance, Del. Terry Austin and Sen. John Edwards, who represent portions of Southwest Virginia, sponsored bills that remove state boat ramp fees and boost DNA tracking. Del. Matt Farriss also had a bill signed into law by the governor.

Here’s a look at some of the newly signed laws:

  • House Bill 283 and Senate Bill 467 requires that law enforcement have training standards in place so that officers are better equipped to recognize, prevent and report human trafficking
  • House Bill 741 requires local schools to design a thorough, accurate floor plan for school safety audits
  • House Bill 120 allows some disabled veterans to purchase a lifetime hunting and fishing license at no cost or at a reduced cost
  • House Bill 463 and Senate Bill 141 removes the fee for state boat ramps
  • House Bill 774 and Senate Bill 499 establishes a task force that will examine the life cycle of renewable energy facilities in Virginia
