More than 40 hate groups reside in Virginia, according to new report

The Southern Poverty Law Center released its annual “Year in Hate & Extremism” report on Tuesday.

Hate groups are in the spotlight following the January 6th Capitol riots now more than ever.

The report shows in 2022 they tracked 43 groups in Virginia.

However, it shows there’s been a downtick in militia groups like the Oath Keepers, which staff said is due to members being held accountable for their role in the capitol riots.

“Confronting those who seek to destroy our democracy is critical to dismantling white supremacy and advancing the civil and human rights of all people in this country,” President & CEO Margaret Huang of the Southern Poverty Law Center said.

Additionally, the report shows there are over 1,200 active hate groups nationwide.
