Deputies: New charges filed against grandfather, dog owner in Bedford County case

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – An additional charge has been filed against the grandfather who told deputies he shot a dog that he said bit his grandson.

A Bedford County Sheriff’s Animal Control deputy charged Fred Dooley with cruelty of an animal on Tuesday. He already faced a charge of reckless handling of a firearm.

Bedford County 911 dispatchers received a call to Oak Park Drive in Goodview for a report that a man had just shot a dog in front of children at 8:20 p.m. July 19.

While deputies were responding, dispatchers received a call from Fred Dooley. Dooley advised dispatchers that a neighbor’s dog bit his grandson, requested an ambulance.

In addition to Dooley's new charge, Natasha Simpson, the dog’s owner, was charged with failing to vaccinate (rabies) and failing to have registered a dog.
