State police: Bassett woman dies in Route 220 crash after failing to stop at intersection

FRANKLIN CO., Va. – State police say a Bassett woman died in a crash at a Route 220 intersection in Franklin County. 

It happened around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday. State police say a 1987 Jeep Wrangler was traveling westbound on Fork Mountain Road when the driver failed to stop at the stop sign at the Route 220 intersection. A tractor trailer headed northbound on Route 220 then hit the Jeep, causing the Jeep to flip.

The driver of the Jeep, Angela C. Martin, 68, of Bassett, was pronounced dead at the scene. State police say she was improperly restrained at the time of the crash, wearing the lap belt but not the shoulder belt. A 7-year old child in the Jeep was not hurt. 

The tractor trailer driver, Ralph G. Elio, 65, of North Babylon, New York, was not injured.

No charges are expected at this time.
