Alleghany Humane Society thanks community for support after animal abuse case

Great Dane ended up at the facility about 50 pounds underweight

LOW MOOR, Va. – The Alleghany Humane Society is thanking the community for its support after taking in a malnourished dog.

A Great Dane named Jewel ended up at the facility in Low Moor on April 13, weighing just 81 pounds.

Since then, Jewel has gained back 31 percent of her body weight.

A social media post asking the community to petition the court for the owner to not get the dog back reached 60,000 people.

“It's been impressive the calls we've gotten, so many people wanting updates, wondering how she's doing day by day, a lot of interest in adopting her, so she's going to have a wonderful life,” explained Executive Director of the Alleghany Humane Society Brittany Jackson.

Jackson says since yesterday 30 to 40 people have expressed interest in adopting Jewel.
