Lexington prepares for opposing parades in January

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Lexington Police Department is preparing for the worst case scenario during the three-day parade weekend in January.

Chief Sam Roman says he is hoping for no conflict during the Lee-Jackson Day parade and MLK Day in January.

After the incidents in Charlottesville, the city re-evaluated the safety plan for the city of Lexington.

The police chief says his department is working on a plan created by the Department of Homeland Security designed to keep everyone safe.

In the past, the two opposing parades were held on the same day and route causing tension in the city. In 2017, they were held on different days and that will carry over to 2018.

"Even before my arrival here in Lexington, I think the city and the department heads were very well versed in managing parades. Obviously this is a place that has a lot of parades. So I think for that reason the city and the officers are very well-versed in handling parades," said Sam Roman, Lexington police chief.
