Appomattox officials don't believe Confederate memorial applies to VA governor's release

County officials say memorial commemorates residents who served in Civil War

LYNCHBURG, Va. – In Virginia, areas like Appomattox bring in tourists who are interested in learning about Civil War history.

In the town stands a memorial commemorating Appomattox residents who served in the Civil War.

The mayor of the town spoke Thursday in place of the county administrator.

He said the monument was erected in 1905 and that it's a generic statue and there is no general's name or leader of the Confederacy attached to it.

"Right now we do feel like, since it's just a statue for our fallen service people during the Civil War, it really isn't under the governor's press release information," Appomattox Mayor Paul Harvey said.

County and town officials said the statue is on county property. If further discussion were to take place about taking it down, the board of advisers would have to discuss it.
