LYNCHBURG, Va. – Authorities have a suspect in custody after a car chase through Lynchburg on Tuesday.
At 11:20 a.m., officers located the vehicle of Clifton Lamont Irving, who was wanted in connection with a series of car break-ins, and attempted to stop his car near Caroline Street and Smyth Street.
Rather than stop, Irving drove away from police and led them on a chase through the city and into Bedford County.
He eventually left his vehicle in the 2500-block of Hooper Road and tried to run away from authorities.
Officers and Bedford County Sheriff's Office deputies tracked Irving down and took him into custody in Ivy Creek behind Riley Run Road at 12:28 p.m., according to the Lynchburg Police Department.
Jefferson Forest High School, Forest Middle School, Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, Forest Elementary School and Dearington Elementary were all on lockdown, but those lockdowns have been lifted.
Irving now faces charges of felony eluding police, destruction of property and three counts of unlawfully entering a vehicle. Additional charges against Irving are pending.
