Jesse Jackson visits Lynchburg colleges

Jackson speaks to students at Virginia University of Lynchburg about voting

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Jesse Jackson’s tour of the Commonwealth took him to the central region of the state Monday. He made stops at Randolph College and Virginia University of Lynchburg, speaking to students about the importance of registering to vote and the power of voting.

   
The civil rights activist and politician talked about his visit to Charlottesville and the tragic events there.

“Many of our young people are not clear on the voting process and why voting is importan," said James Coleman the Director of Doctoral Program at Virginia University at Lynchburg, "And a historic icon like Jesse Jackson, who as a college student started his career motivating young adults to get involved, that's going to be huge today for the students on this campus. And it will reverberate throughout the city."

“It's good that he's here and teaching us things that we obviously haven't gotten to experience yet and it’s good to hear from someone that’s been through everything he has gone through,” said John Templar, a junior at Virginia University of Lynchburg.


Jackson also spoke to community members at Diamond Hill Baptist Church. Rev.Jesse Jackson will continue his tour across Virginia for the next two days.
